This post gave me one of the "ah ha" moments. It's so simple and yet I didn't even consider doing it. I got caught up in press releases and ads, while ignoring a hyper-local grassroots approach. Thanks for the post!

I found this article to be very insightful. You mentioned two things that helped me maintain perspective as a writer. 1) Book sales don't tell everything. I almost cringe when people ask me this question, especially if they haven't purchased the book. :o) My book has been out three months. I'm not expecting a million sales here. However, I feel the book will lead me to other opportunities that add more value than I could measure by the number sold alone. 2) You mentioned the advantage of a niche market. I definitely have a niche market because although my books are urban, they are not exactly street lit. However, they are highly relevant to the "urban" book market. Ok, so one more thing came up in this blog that struck a cord with me-surrounding yourself with professionals. I found it relieving to receive feedback from professionals. I had a person give me their honest opinion about my writing, including technical aspects and story line development. Although she loved the story and encouraged others to read it, her honest feedback helped me to become a better writer (especially when it came down to technique). Thanks for the information in this blog. I feel refreshed!!!

This article about Kwan was fantastic, readers dont know the execution of what it takes to be a author. I personally had no concept, I was a reader and a fan without even realizing the behind the scenes work and dilligent effort it takes to be recognized in the industry. What makes me even more of a fan is read they are authentic hustlers who have educated themselves and are now extremely successful.

once again small things ( reader ) to a giant ( author ).

Respectfully,

Anyeta

I'm gonna tone down my response to "Thinks" July 2010 remark. But, I think that that is silly as heck, to put it mildly. Latifah is saying women should treat themselves on a much higher level than they merely do. "Treat Yourself Like a Queen" is merely a pun, a play on words as well as a simile.

The example used where Think says living like a queen is to mistreat people is butt backwards. Queen-dom didn't start in Europe with Kings, Queens & their squires & so on. This thing goes waaaaaay back. And there were people in some, many kingdoms who were wealthier than the King & Queen. Their empires in Africa where the king was wealthy wth long, old money. They lived lavishly & the ppl were'nt their subject bt citizens of the empire. Being much much wealthier than the people meant they had a responsibility to take care of them & they did. But, Latifah isn't speaking of kingdoms, nor any of this. She's merely saying be good to yourself, feel good about yourself like a queen ddoes when it comes to treating yourself or feeling special.
Why would you tae the ball & run down hill like you did? Where's the negativity coming from when she's trying t get women to love themselves. Don't ill treat your freedom of speech.

Black people come from a vast amount of experiences and that is always what I look for in reading different fiction. Personally, my heritage and life experiences have taken me all over the globe and back again. I hope that as I pursue writing I will be able to see and hear all experiences told with tenacity and boldness in each authors own words.
